Celebrating Moms Means Celebrating All of Us

It’s Mother’s Day!

Which means – let’s be honest – today’s a complicated day.

I’ve come to believe that there is no one-size-fits-all experience on Mother’s Day. My own relationship with this holiday is multi-faceted…hopeful, grateful, loving, tense, overwhelming, emotional. It’s truly all. the. things!

But one thing I have come to see very, very clearly? Without mothers, none of us would be here.

Mothers make our world possible. Literally.

Importantly, I believe that everyone – no matter your biology or gender – can mother. It’s not something that’s limited to anatomy.

Mothering is caring – for others, for nature, for ourselves.

Mothering is looking beyond the easy or the short term – and making choices that benefit the future, that protect the weakest, and do the most good for the greatest number.

Mothering is being open, vulnerable, and authentic – and creating space for others to do that, too.

We all have the capacity to mother others, to love and accept others, fully and openly. To see each other’s humanity, and make brave choices from that place.

Try This Out

Today I’m wondering how you’re celebrating Mother’s Day. Not because there’s a right way or a wrong way.

But because today is a day to celebrate all of us.

Take a moment to consider:

  • How do you define ‘mothering’? Where (or from whom) did you learn this definition?

  • Who are the people in your life that have mothered you? (this may be your biological mother, but it may not. Aunts, sisters, grandmothers, friends, mentors – they all count.)

  • In what ways do you mother the people in your life? For whom, and how, do you show care, love, compassion and bravery?

  • What would it look like to mother yourself today? How might you make choices, set limits, or otherwise honor yourself today?

What To Do Next

Speaking of mothers… did you know that 1 in 4 kids in the US has missed school because they can’t afford period products?

Dallas Travers, a coach and role model I respect, invited me to be part of something big: 40 experts in entrepreneurship, coaching, and more – all coming together to give away their best resources.

And the best part? For every sign-up, $1 gets donated to Period.org, a teen-founded nonprofit fighting period poverty in the U.S.

It’s one small but significant way we can mother the youngest among us, today.
